Effetto Venezia is a folkloric event held every summer between July and August in the Venezia Nuova district. It is an event not to be missed if you are in Livorno at this time of year.
Effetto Venezia was first held in 1986 with the aim of contributing to the historical, architectural and commercial recovery of the district. For the occasion, a series of events, shows, craft and antique stalls are set up in the streets, on the canals and in some of the district’s historic buildings. Many are the stands offering the most delicious local delicacies, but it is certainly the people of Livorno, who, by expressing their identity and truthfulness, make a difference: it is an opportunity to show the many foreigners the beauty and allure of this district, which hides a piece of paradise in every little nook and cranny.
The characteristic and fascinating Venezia district, so called because its canals, bridges and small squares take us back to the evocative atmosphere of the Venetian city, is today considered Livorno’s historic heart.
The district is the only one in the city centre that has kept much of its original structure after the devastation of World War II. As a result, it is a district of great charm. Here, tall, imposing buildings have direct access to the canals, just below street level, to facilitate the unloading of goods directly into the inner courtyards.
Tobacco, spices, chocolate, coffee, indigo, Greek mastic and even diamonds were once unloaded onto its quays.
