The Giostra dell’Antenna (the Carousel of the Antenna) is the oldest and most characteristic rowing event in Livorno. The race takes place on the evening of May 21st, the eve of the feast of Santa Giulia, patron saint of Livorno. The various districts of the city of Livorno participate and it takes place in the Darsena Nuova of the Porto Mediceo, where a 12-meter high steel antenna is placed from which four ropes depart: upon arrival, the “fitter” of each crew must climb up to top and conquer the “rag” to win the race.
Before the rowing competition, a procession of illuminated historic boats takes place which, starting from the statue of the Madonna dei Popoli, located at the entrance to the port, accompany the relics of Santa Giulia to the competition venue, in the historic and maritime heart of the city.
At the end of the evening a firework display is expected and, the following day, the religious celebrations dedicated to the Saint.
